Is the great Australian dream disappearing?

What's your dream?

We all grew up knowing the great Australian dream was to own a home on a quarter-acre block, have a couple of kids and a comfortable retirement, but did we really want it? And if we did, have things changed?

"I hear people telling me about all sorts of things, for instance I met a farm hand outside a bottle shop in Moree...this Aboriginal farmhand pulled up with beautiful green eyes and dancing with amazing energy...He said, 'today we knocked down twenty trees and now I'm going to get drunk'. He said, 'that's what I do and that's my Australian Dream, I'm working and on the weekend I drink'...I'm not trying to judge the dream, I'm trying to collect and understand the dreams and what makes people tick." Says Julian Ninio, a Harvard educated author who moved from America to Australia four years ago.

What about the traditional dream of owning the family home, having a couple of kids and retiring comfortably? "It's alive and kicking, and I meet a lot of people who say they are fulfilling that dream, a lot of people in rural areas say that they feel happy here because it's safe, they can own their property, it's safe for their kids...But I meet a lot of people who say that that dream is being less achievable because of land prices going up and I also meet people who say that now the dream is perfection, which can make it pretty hard to achieve," Julian says.

"The American Dream is very well defined, every one knows that dream," he says, "It's the dream of social ascention, it's the land of opportunity, and you always hear success stories, people such as Bill Clinton of Colin Powell saying 'I've made it therefore you can'"

"Cities, all over the world, attract people who are career driven and when you're trying to succeed and in that competitive environment, no matter where you are, you're going to work very hard...That being said, I see lots of people in Sydney at Bondi Beach in the summer so I think people still manage to have a bit more of a relaxed lifestyle than in the US."

"Newcastle was a bit special, as it's been depressed economically, and people were saying there's no Australian dream anymore in Newcastle for people over forty who still want to work," Julian says.

"I also met some young women who told me that for them the dream was money, fashion and plastic surgery and they said, a lot of women around them want to feel beautiful, they want the glamour and want to look like the people in the magazines.

"Another aspect of Australian society I find extraordinarily seductive, that appeals to me, is the idea of a classless, egalitarian society, meaning I feel I can speak with anyone here, whatever their job, and that no one thinks I'm putting myself above them and vice versa," he said.

So when Julian and his wife decided to pack up and head Down Under, were they chasing the Australian Dream? "We decided to live outside of the US for four years and heard about Australia, found the image extraordinarily seductive, this idea of the relaxed lifestyle," he says, "In the US, we finish work at eight or nine o'clock, work weekends, but here we see people going down to the beach after work.

"We got off the plane, and got medicare cards; I've never paid a cent for a doctor here in Australia and in the US we pay hundreds of dollars a month for that.

So what is Julian's Australian Dream?

"My dream is being a writer, my first book came out earlier this year at the Sydney Writers Festival and that was my dream, coming to Australia to write and have a good excuse to see some really beautiful country," he said.

There are a number of reasons why Scorpio's might have trouble achieving our dreams. The obvious ones include:

  • Fear to share the dream
  • Lack of confidence
  • Past experience
  • Low self esteem
    However there is one aspect that we hear little about, that is Scorpio 'vitality expectancy'.
    It may be that whatever action we take or idea we think about is tarnished with a background thought: 'Don't build your hopes too high because you will properly fail anyway', or 'Brace yourself for disappointment', or 'I can't do that!' or any number of negative feelings.
